The war is over. I appreciate the autobiographical interludes in Dreamsongs, as I love to know what inspires a writer — what times and places in his history, events in his life, what other authors, etc.

I found the actual conflict to be less inspired, even though it started out wonderfully. Clearly, Martin is destined to become one of the most important fantasy as well as science fiction and horror writers of our time. He explains why he took up writing and describes his early experiences in the field. The best horror stories tell us truths. With collections like this there are almost always a few that stand and, inevitably, a few that are easily forgotten.
