Robert Rossalso 19, decides to join the Canadian army due to the death of his sister and finds himself in the same trench as Paul. Paul later figures that the training taught by Himmelstoss made them “hard, suspicious, pitiless, and tough” but most importantly it taught them comradeship.
It is a must read. The story moves forward at lightning pace; and yet there is nuance and depth, too, in this short novel.
