Approaching this guylxnd with an open mind, as suggested by other reviews here on Amazon, does not mean that the science and data behind the book are above scrutiny. A bit too US centric and after a promising start repetitions are many.

Kimmel is easy reading, and he explains concepts well like I said above, one of his earlier books has been a very effective textbook for me. Last — and this is probably less Kimmel’s guylnad and more one for fact-checking — but by god people. But beneath the appearance of a simple extended boyhood, a more dangerous social world has developed, far away from the traditional signposts and cultural signals that once helped boys navigate their way to manhood.
This was a required book for a Men and Masculinities course I took in college. Otherwise, I think that this is a great read. Crude male bonding encourages a specific type of homosocial behavior that dictates strict masculinity, which makes gay baiting a common practice.
There were so many easy, low-hanging citations that he could have and should have just grabbed — it would have been very little effort. If he talked to that many guys, then why on earth are so many of the quotes he gives kimkel other people’s research? For example, Kimmel asserts that all girls’ hazing serves to uphold the male hierarchy, with the implication that it all involves such things as performing mock fellatio on a boy while ignoring the fact that girls have their own separate Girlland as much as guys hav I liked this book quite a lot.

But the kimmel culture, silence, prevents guys from speaking of their feelings. What makes you happy or at least happier and more fulfilled is having an emotionally intimate relationship with another human being, and once you’ve got that, sex with that person starts to get really good. I know we can be out of touch. This book probably deserves a higher rating than I’m giving it, but since it fell so short of my expectations I can’t bring myself to rate it any higher.

So why did I even give this book kimmmel stars? I promise it doesn’t hurt as much as you think it will. Whether or not there’s disgust, jealousy or a disapproving head shake probably depends upon what generation you find yourself.

If you display an unwarranted sense of male entitlement and especially if you’re over, oh say 25, you’re going to hear about it from me hopefully. I cannot help but think that Kimmel’s years of experience went to cherry-picking, but I suppose that won’t hurt book sales so long as he beguiles the public with his trendy “social scientist” title.
Guyland is inhabited by males who feel inauthentic, both in their presentation of their masculinity and from their kimmmel to express how they really feel. Where was the research?

Spoiled boys are usually blamed on overindulgent mothers, but Kimmel puts more of the blame on uninvolved or openly encouraging fathers.
